Study Away—Italy, 2014

A group of 11 of our Honors students traveled to Italy from May 10 through May 23 accompanied by Professors John Caserta and Mike Ryan. They had the opportunity to learn about the language, culture and literature of Italy while visiting cities including Rome, Capri, Florence and Venice. Megan Brockett, a junior majoring in Accounting shared her photos from the trip with us. Below, Megan gives a brief description of the photos she shared:

“This is a vineyard we visited in Tuscany, Italy.  It is by far one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and I really hope to be able to visit Tuscany again.  We were only there for a few hours, but it was one of the best parts of the trip.”

“Another part of the trip that I loved was visiting the Colosseum in Rome. I loved this because not only did I get to see it, but I also got to go inside with two other friends I had made on the trip.It was exciting to be in a place that holds so much history. It was much more magnificent and amazing than I ever could have thought.”

“Florence, Italy was full of people and beautiful views like this bridge. In Florence, there were these HUGE leather markets. These markets went through many of the streets.  There were hundreds of vendors and some beautiful leather jackets and bags.”

“The leaning tower of Pisa was such a fun day trip to go on while we were staying in Florence.  There were a lot of people there taking the signature pictures of pushing the tower over or any other fun ideas they could come up with.”

“The Island of Capri was absolutely amazing! This is a picture of my first look at Capri, the Marina, on our taxi boat over to the Island from Naples. The Marina was at the bottom of the island and we were staying on Ana Capri, which is at the top of the island.”

“This is the Blue Grotto. The water glows this beautiful blue color because the sun shines in through the opening and bounces off the back wall of the cave. To get into the Blue Grotto you have to take a gondola boat (about the size of a canoe) through a 4 foot high opening. It was pretty scary but definitely worth it! I would absolutely do it again.”

“Venice, Italy was one of the places I really wanted to visit while I was in Italy. It was amazing to see this city surrounded by water. I had the chance to take a gondola ride around the city and it was pretty awesome. It is one of those things I may never get to do again. It was also a cool way to see the city!”

“This picture is from the top of St. Peter’s Basilica. You could walk around the entire dome and see miles across the top of Rome. The view was incredible. St. Peter’s Basilica is so majestic and is a place I think you have to visit if you ever go to Rome.”

“Overall, visiting Italy is by far one of the most amazing and exciting things I have ever done. If you ever get the chance to go on this Italy trip, or on any study abroad trip, I would definitely suggest it!” —Megan Brockett
