Geography and History: The Cultural Landscape as a Palimpsest
Cultural geographers use the word palimpsest, old parchments that contain records of old and new, to describe the landscape of cities. Cities show a wide variety of cultural landscapes, the reading of which gives insights into the interactions between people and their surroundings. Because cityscapes change, they offer a lot of opportunities for uncovering remnants of the past. I will discuss the cases of Quebec City, Detroit, New York, Granada, Teotihuacan, Paris, and Taos, New Mexico.
