Michelangelo’s David
On Thursday, April 4, 2013, Professor Rachel Foulk will be presenting a Lunch and Learn,”More Than a Pretty Face? Ideals of Beauty in Art” at 11:00 AM in HFE 102. This event was originally scheduled for March 5. What does the ideal man or woman look like? How do we define beauty? The human body-both male and female-is one of the most popular subjects in the history of art. In this illustrated discussion, we will look at numerous representations of the human form to understand how the idea of beauty has changed over time. Examples will include statues from ancient Egypt and Greece, as well as paintings from Renaissance Italy and nineteenth century France. We will also consider modern magazine covers and the presentation of beauty in popular media today.
