Professor Richard Griffin will be presenting a Lunch and Learn on the Study Abroad Program to Hungary and Romania on Thursday, September 19, 2013 in the Honors Conference Room 142C. This Lunch and Learn will cover the following topics:
“The Impact of Globalization Upon Eastern European Society:
The Political Cultures of Hungary & Romania”
STUDY ABROAD
SUMMER 2014
This Study Abroad Program will introduce students to the following topics:
Hungarian & Romanian history
- historical and current Hungarian-Romanian political and social relations
- historical and current Hungarian-American political and social relations
- historical and current Romanian-American political and social relations
- Hungary’s & Romania’s role and place in the European Union
- the history of Budapest and its role in Hungarian/European history
- the historical, political, social, and cultural impact of Soviet communism upon Hungary
- the historical, political, social, and cultural impact of Nazi Germany and the Arrow Cross (Hungarian Nazism) upon Hungary
Students will also be expected to demonstrate an appreciation for
- Hungarian culture
- Hungarian theater and folklore
- Hungarian artesian crafts
- the Hungarian language
- Transylvanian (Romanian/Hungarian) folklore
- the role and importance of wines in Hungarian society and economics
- the cultural and social impact of Budapest throughout the country of Hungary, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe
The instructional models and delivery methods of this program include
- lectures at the University of Debrecen (UD) in Debrecen and in Budapest
- field trips throughout Hungary and Romania, including Debrecen, Budapest, Tokaj, and Hortobágy, Hungary and Oradea/Nagyvárad (Transylvania), Romania
- meetings with Hungarian community leaders, political leaders, and university students and with Romanian (Transylvanian) students
- cultural events such as theater performances, traditional Hungarian and Romanian dinners, folklore events, sightseeing events, and tours
