Please join us in Business 111 on February 10, 2014 at 7:30PM  for a dynamic, high energy, diversity lecture by Dr. Paul Hernandez.

Before he earned a PhD in Sociology, before his bachelors degree from a university, before his associates degree from a community college, Dr. Hernandez was homeless, living in the streets of Los Angeles. Come and hear his inspiring story, and current work with the National College Positive Volunteer Program, United Way and the College 101 program.

“Today, Hernandez, an associate professor of sociology at Central Michigan University, channels the frustrations of his early years into engaging students like him and providing them with opportunities. He reminds students every day that they can reach their goals.

Hernandez created “College 101: Introducing At-Risk Students to Higher Education,” to help struggling middle and high school students. Hernandez, along with his team of student volunteers, help those students discover their passion for learning, and direct it into avenues for success. The experience is life-changing for these students, who go from potential high school dropouts to college students.” (MEA Voice Magazine, 6/20/113)

Dr. Hernandez will also be providing College Positive and Mentorship training for all students who are interested in volunteering, mentoring, and helping others.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Latin@ Studies and the College of Health Professions.
