Dear Honors students,
I am writing to explain our normal process of dealing with registration for our English and Literature courses. In order to ensure balance and comprehensive coverage of our courses, we use a “tried and true” method of keeping course caps (the number of students who may enroll in a course) even and at a level that allows us a little wiggle room for additional students.
We monitor this list closely, and the minute we see a course section beginning to fill, we open it up to allow more enrollees. This “flip of the switch” takes only a moment. With this method, we have had no problem with students being able to get into the courses that they need for the semester.
In addition, this year, Ferris State University has an exciting new feature in its electronic wait list. If a course is filled, you put your name on the list and as soon as the course cap rises or another student drops the course, you are immediately automatically emailed to see if you would like to add that class. You then have 24 hrs to decide before the system moves onto the next person in the wait list. Thus, if a section that you really wanted to get into has completely filled, you can enroll in another section, and put your name on your first choice section, saving you from having to constantly monitor your desired sections to see if there is room.
Some notes about how to be most successful as you register for our courses: be sure to verify the CRN number before you enter it and be sure that you have taken the online tutorial quiz if you plan to enroll in any of our online sections. If you have any questions, feel free to speak with your advisor or to call us in the Languages and Literature department. Although our staff is busy during registration as they assist students, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
