Only 75 miles from our nation’s capital, Shenandoah National Park is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the beltway. Established in 1935, the park protects a wide variety of natural and historic resources. Prehistoric humans lived on the Blue Ridge Mountains and evidence of continued habitation is spread across the park. Most of the park is covered in hardwood forests which from a distance are often seen through a haze of water vapor giving the Blue Ridge its name.
