Online vs. Traditional Math Courses

Ferris State University along with many other colleges and universities in the United States offers a program known as ALEKs: a web-based, course management assessment and learning system. According to the official ALEKs website, “ALEKS is an adaptive, online learning program that is proven to significantly raise grades, retention, and pass rates at higher education institutions around the world. By providing effective, individualized learning in an open-response environment, ALEKS quickly resolves college-readiness and course mastery issues for millions of students.” To determine whether or not this statement is true for students at Ferris, a comprehensive final exam was given to students in both the classic paper/pencil MATH115 course and the corresponding ALEKs MATH115 course. Through examination of the results of the exam we have determined that non-ALEKs students performed better than ALEKs students overall. This presentation will further examine the reasons for the difference in performance between the ALEKS group and the non-ALEKS group.
