This course examines the existence of an American way of thinking by surveying several thinkers that have directly or indirectly addressed the concept of the American Dream. We will consider diverse American thinkers to provide a philosophically and historically based understanding of distinctive, yet related, intellectual trends in the United States which have come to constitute the main touchstones for determining our individual and collective identities, (including Jonathan Edwards, Benjamin Franklin, Emerson, Thoreau, Booker T. Washington, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Du Bois, Martin Luther King). We will in doing so foster engagement in the project of framing a society theoretically committed to freedom, peace and justice, yet rejecting many of these same ideas in practice.
