2014 Honors Variety Show

On Monday, November 10 the West Campus Community Center was filled with the sound of laughter and applause as the Honors Programming Board presented the Tenth Annual Honors Variety Show. Since it’s creation in 2004,  the Variety Show has been held yearly for the purpose of raising funds for a local charitable organization. Past recipients have included Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Big Rapids, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Big Rapids Public Library, HOPE Network, WISE and the Jim Crow Museum, just to name a few. This year, the proceeds from the Variety Show totaling $150 was donated to the Salvation Army. Salvation Army Representative, Lt. Chris attended the show to share how this organization helps the needy in the Big Rapids community.

The audience was entertained by seven acts ranging from singers, a stand-up comic, and dancers. Audience members were also chosen to participate in four separate Crowd Participation segments; a “Dance-Off” competition displayed some wild dance skills to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”,  and a “Lip Sync” competition with contestants rockin’ out to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”,  “Minute to Win It” had participants get an Oreo cookie from their forehead into their mouth within one minute,  and  a “Hula Hoop Challenge”.

After some very tough competition, the Judge’s Choice Award was presented to Irma Collins for her Flow Art performance, “Manifestation”.  The group ‘Entervention’ with band members Keith Salowich on bass guitar, Cody Burkhardt, guitar and backup vocals, Mac Hay, drummer, and T.K. White, lead vocals where chosen as Crowd Favorite. Each winner received a plaque, as well as gift certificates to a Big Rapids area business.
