Crisis Line Volunteer/Shelter Assistant
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in the shelter between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Answering crisis calls
2. Filing, copying, faxing, and typing
3. Computer work: documenting client services and incoming calls
4. Special projects
Hours and Times: A volunteer must sign up for at least one day per month, preferable for at least 3 hours. A calendar will be located in the shelter in the volunteer sign-in book, as well as the communication book for shelter staff. All volunteers must sign up at least one month in advance for their days and times. All days and times are on a ‘first come/first serve’ basis.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years old or older, with a high school diploma or equivalent. Office experience, preferred. Must have accurate written and spelling skills. Must have good oral communication skills, as well as acceptable telephone skills. Must be able to handle crisis in a calm and empathetic manner. Must be punctual and dependable, as well as time management skills and ability to multi-task. Will complete a 2 hour training in WISE 101, and a 2-3 hour training in WISE 102.
Benefits: Volunteer will be receiving necessary office work experience for future employment. Direct work with victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Experience with day-to-day shelter operations. Learning, and implementing crisis response skills.
