This course will consider the political, social, intellectual, religious, and economic history of Ancient Greece and of Ancient Rome. Using primary sources from the periods in question, we will consider the great politicians, philosophers, and generals; religious beliefs and practices; the role of warfare in society; governmental institutions; gender relations and sexuality; and the impact of geography upon the development of these societies. We will also be using films such as “Gladiator,” “Alexander,” “Spartacus” and “300” to determine the difference between historical fact and Hollywood fiction. This course meets the Cultural Enrichment requirement for General Education.
