The senior symposium ask students to develop an original contribution to the knowledge of their chosen profession or discipline. While it is not always easy to conduct ‘research’ as it may be traditionally understood as an undergraduate, our students have been wonderfully creative in how they connect their work to their interests. All of the posters were interesting — and they represent the wide variety of programs and areas of study available here at Ferris.
Senior Symposium Winners of 2015:
Melissa Davis, outstanding symposium project 2015, From Ferris SmugMug Gallery.
Melissa Davis, “Quick Grip-Lock” created a prototype of Locking pliers, also known as Vise-grips, that can be used with one hand. Melissa’s inventiveness with a product that we all probably know and use is remarkable, and I look forward to seeing them on the shelves in the future.
Nick Larson, Outstanding Symposium Project 2015, from Ferris SmugMug gallery.
Nick Larson, “Creating a Digital Study Aid” Created his own digital study aid for pharmacy school. Nick’s originality and creativity in addressing a problem he, and many pharmacy school students face is notable. Nick’s well-rounded education allowed him to come at this problem with remarkable ingenuity and he created a novel solution that may well help future pharmacy students.
Caitlin Wright, Outstanding Symposium project 2015, From Ferris SmugMug gallery.
Caitlin Wright, “The Efficacy of Common Mouthwashes”, in which she tested in vitro the efficacy of common mouthwashes in reducing mouth bacteria. Caitlin’s work is notable in its independence–she designed and implemented an experiment that produced a, at least, preliminary result, using her own saliva and finding lab space in the DMOL lab in Grand Rapids.
Honorable mentions:
Posters did not win the ‘Outstanding symposium’ awards this year, the judges felt that their originality and aesthetics were worthy of special recognition. We’d like to recognize them at the dinner tomorrow night.
Rachel Crane, Honorable mention for Symposium project, from Ferris SmugMug gallery.
Rachel Crane “Don’t Go Green, Go Sustainable,” which is recognized not only for the architecturally significant way the poster is displayed, but also for the interesting argument it puts forward.
Nicole Christy, Honorable mention for symposium project, from Ferris SmugMug gallery.
Nicole Christy “Baby Teeth Win the Crown in Stem Cell Research”, a very thorough and passionate investigation into plausibility of growing teeth from the stem cells found in baby teeth, potentially making dental implants, porcelain veneers and crowns obsolete.
Connor Ivens, Honorable mention for symposium project, Melissa Davis, outstanding symposium project 2015, From Ferris SmugMug Gallery.
Connor Ivens “Creating the Sixth Sense”, in which he built a wearable ‘sixth sense’ computer, and investigated the security implications thereof.
