UNCW Honors Semester in Wales

The Honors College at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is sponsoring their annual semester abroad program in Wales at Swansea University, winner of the coveted London Times award for “best student experience” among British universities, as determined by student votes. This year, the semster will be hosted by Dr. Bill Atwill, Department of English at UNCW. He will be teaching two courses at Swansea, plus and honor seminar. Honors student from the Honors Program at Ferris State University are now welcome to apply for the spring 2016 term. Please see below for more specific details.

The Setting: Swansea University, overlooking beautiful Swansea Bay, is situated within a large area of landscaped parkland within walking distance of the city center. To the west is the lovely Gower Peninsula with its board bays and sandy coves. Swansea is a modern city of 200,000 with well-equipped leisure centers and cultural facilities. Swansea can be reached by train from London in about 2 1/2 hours.

Course of Study: The program is accepting students interested in either a 3-credit internship OR a 3-credit pre-semester course in British Culture and Politics, completing a regular semester of course work from the Swansea University Catalog (12 credit hours), and a two-hour honors seminar for credit. Honors Students may earn up to 17 U.S. semester credits at Swansea. Students must be honors students of any major in good standing at their home universities.

Schedule Spring 2016:

  • Arrival: January 17, 2016
  • Pre-Semester Course on British Culture and Politics (last two weeks of January) OR internship
  • Classes start: approximately end of January or beginning of Feburary
  • Easter vacation will be more than three weeks long – yes, you read that right! – and offers an outstanding opportunity to travel throughout Europe
  • Last day of final exams is June 10, 2016. Students may stay in campus accommodations until Friday, June 24th, 2016.

Costs and Applications:  $11,355.  The cost includes tuition and fees, accommodation, study abroad health insurance, orientation, a bedding packet (including duvet), local bus pass, scheduled field trips, and internship placement/pre-sessional program. Not included are airfare, meals, and books; budget approximately $3,000 for these expenses.

The first deposit of $500 (non-refundable) is due with completed application at application deadline. The rest of the payment will be due in mid-December. Installment options are available at http://uncw.edu/studentaccounts/TuitionPaymentPlan.html. (Late applications will be accepted with a $40 late fee on a “space available” basis.)

Application Deadline: 9/30/15 for students who wish to participate in the pre-semester internship experience and 10/15/15 for those who wish to pursue the pre-semester course in British Culture and Politics.
