“Beyond: Globalization” at Ferris State University will be holding their annual MINDS Aflame event on September 29th from 5:30pm till 8:30pm in the Williams Auditorium. This event is similar to a TED Talk and it will include 9 presenters who speak for about 12 minutes each. This speaker series is a great way for students to finish their Cultural Event requirement as each hour of this event counts as one Cultural Event.

Starting off the second hour of the event will be Dave Whitman who is a LGBT Resource Director from Santa Barbara and will be giving a presentation entitled “LGBT Issues Around the World.” Below is a short bio Whitman has provided.

“As a Resident Director, I have worked at Pace University in my hometown of New York City, where I received my undergraduate degree in Communications and a Master’s in Education with a focus in teaching English. After, I began a new adventure on the West coast working at UCSB as both a Resident Director and student organization adviser from 2011-2014, and the Interim Director of LGBTQ services from January-May of 2014. Most recently I had the opportunity to sail as a Resident Director on Semester at Sea’s fall 2014 Voyage, and have been fully embracing every opportunity to experience the world and learn from others. Some of my areas of passion and research include men’s identity development, LGBTQ mental health, mentorship, wellness, and diversity and social justice. In my spare time, I enjoy taking photos, discovering new music, geeking out about sci-fi/super natural media, any outdoor adventures, volleyball, animals, and spending time with friends.”

During his presentation, Whitman will be sharing a 2-3 minute video from one of his students, Alagie Jemmah, who risks imprisonment for speaking out against homophobia, as well as discuss other LGBT issues happening throughout the world.

To see Dave Whitman’s presentation make sure to attend the MINDS Aflame Speaker Series on September 29th!
