OLMECA is a great hip hop artist and activist who has worked alongside Dolores Huerta and spoken with Naomi Klein and Rosa Clemente, among others. His name my sound familiar in that he will be speaking at both MINDS Aflame on September 29th and for Latin@ Heritage month on September 28th. In addition to these two great events, OLMECA will be hosting a completely different workshop in the lower lobby of Pickell on Monday, September 28th at 8:00pm to 9:00pm.

This is an important workshop geared towards first generation college students that will define success as well as break the myths about what success is and means. OLMECA is an advocate for the idea that navigating through college as a first generation student helps shape your cultural identity. He also believes that academic success often comes from students finding a fit between their intersecting socio-cultural-economic identities and the campus culture and climate. OLMECA’s workshops are very interactive and he uses hip hop and spoken word in order to deliver his message.
