Cultural Event: Great Decisions Speaker Series

The Beyond Program at Ferris State University is hosting a Great Decisions Speaker Series. They have two powerful speakers coming to discuss global topics.  Below is a description of each event in the series:

Tuesday, February 2nd – Guest Speaker: Isra El-beshir

From 11am to 12pm in IRC 120, guest speaker, Isra El-beshir, will give a talk entitled “It isn’t Funny: A Political Cartoonist in the Arab World.” Isra El-beshir is the Curator of Education and Public Programming at the Arab American National Museum Deadborn as well as an adjunct professor at Oakland Community College. She graduated with a Master’s in Cultural Anthropology from Wayne State University in 2013. Isra’s research is mainly focused on tropes of identity and belonging within the Muslim and Arab American communities in regards to citizenship, decoloniality, and critical race theory.

Tuesday, February 23rd – Guest Speaker: Dr. Brett O’Bannon

From 11am to 12pm in IRC 120, guest speaker, Dr. Brett O’Bannon, will give a talk entitled “Never Again: The Un’s Role in Genocide Prevention.” Dr. O’Bannon is the Leonard E. and Mary B. Howell Professor of Political Science, and Director of the Conflict Studies Program at Depauw University. His scholarship and practice include conflict analysis and peacebuilding, conflict early warning, mass atrocity prevention, intervention for human protection, and the relationship between security and development, all commonly within the African context. His courses at DePauw include: Gender and World Politics and Humanitarian Intervention and African Politics. He has worked for the UN doing conflict analysis in West Africa ad has just published an edited book, Reassessing the Responsibility to Protect: Conceptual and Operational Challenges (Routledge 2016).

This speaker series would be a great opportunity to gain your own perspective on today’s more serious issues that are occurring around the world!
