Cultural Event: Conference for Aging Schedule

Ferris State University will be hosting The Conference for Aging this week on Thursday, April 7th and Friday, April 8th. This conference is meant to inform students, faculty, and staff about the challenges of an aging population. There will be many events including speakers, student presentations, faculty presentations, and a poster competition. Below is the schedule for the conference.

Thursday, April 7 – IRC, IRC Connector and Business Buildings 

  • 10:00-10:50am The State of Aging in Michigan – In BUS 111, Kari Sederburg, Director for the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging and Brian Barrie, Director, Medicaid Long Term Care Services Division, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to present.
  • 11:00am – 7:00pm Juried Poster Board Scholarship Competition – In the IRC Connector, students will have posters explaining how their individual area of study or future profession will be impacted by the increase in our aging population and how their needs will be met.
  • 11:00am – 1:00pm Health Fair – In the IRC Connector there will be an annual event coordinated by the College of Health Professions with participation from other areas of the university. Health related information is promoted along with screenings.
  • 11:00am – 12:00pm Poetry of Aging – In BUS 130, Languages and Literature Colloquium
  • 11:00am – 12:00pm The Disparate Impact of Alzheimer’s – In BUS 210, Anuli Njoku, Assistant Professor of Public Health, to present.
  • 11:00am – 12:00pm Prolonging the Functional Age – In BUS 219, Margaret Wan, Assistant Professor of Public Health, to present.
  • 1:15-2:30pm Screening Aging – In IRC 120, Lilia Caserta, Instructor; Dr. Susan Morris, Professor of Humanities; and Robert von der Osten, Professor, to present.
  • 1:30-2:45pm Elder Mistreatment and the Role of Public Health Administration – In BUS 219, Emmanuel D. Jadhave, Assistant Professor of Public Health, to present.
  • 3:00-4:15pm Russia Confronts the Challenges of an Aging Population – In IRC 109, Dr. Nadezhda Vanyukhina, Associate Professor, Assistant Dean Psychological Department, Institute of Economics, Management and Law at Kazan University in Russia, to present.
  • 3:00-4:15pm Oral Health and Aging – In BUS 219, Susan Wancour, Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, to present.
  • 3:00-4:50pm Music and Aging, ‘Alive Inside’ Film Discussion – In BUS 111, Daniel Cronk, Associate Professor of Music, to facilitate.
  • 4:30-5:45pm Philosophy of Aging – In BUS 211, John Scott Gray, Professor of Philosophy, and Dr. Grant Snider, Associate Professor of Humanities, to present.
  • 6:30-8:00pm Keynote: Workforce Implications for an Aging Society – In IRC Auditorium 120, Dr. Robyn Stone, Executive Director of @LeadingAge Center of Applied Research, will present. She is a noted researcher and leading international authority on aging and long-term care policy. She worked for the Federal Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (now known as the Agency for Heathcare Research an Quality). Dr. Stone also served the White House as deputy assistant secretary for disability, aging and long-term care policy and as acting assistant secretary for aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as well as at Project Hope’s Center for Health Affairs. Stone was on the staff of the 1989 Bipartisan on Health Care Reform. Dr. Stone holds a doctorate in public health from the University of California, Berkeley.
