Templeton Press is taking submissions for six scholarship prizes of up to $5000. They would like to hear responses from Honors students on the following issue:
“We at Templeton Press recently followed Allan Bloom’s famous book The Closing of the American Mind with our new book, The State of the American Mind: 16 Leading Critics on the New Anti-Intellectualism. To us and our 16 authors, it seems Bloom’s worries are being confirmed: the American Mind – the very character of what it means to be an American – is changing. Where once “being an American” meant respected others’ freedom of speech, colleges now disinvite speakers who fail to affirm what student bodies already think; where once Americans cared about informed voting, we now votes with a sports mentality, rooting for our favorite while knowing little about where they stand on key issues.
Now, we want to hear what students think about all this. Do these critiques seem spot on, or are they completely backwards?”
The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2016. Please visit their website for free sections of their book, as well as prompts, instructions, and more information.
