The Honors Program will be taking a limited number of students to Grand Rapids this Fall to see American Idiot, music by Green Day and Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The play runs from October 27th through November 12th at Actors’ Theatre at Spectrum Theatre starting at 8pm each night. Below is a short description of the play.

“American Idiot is a sung-through stage adaptation of punk rock band Green Day’s rock opera, America Idiot. The story, expanded from that of the concept album centers on three disaffected young men looking for meaning in life. They escape suburbia and try out the freedom and excitement of the city. One quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military, and is shipped off to war. Another turns to drugs and finds a part of himself that he grows to dislike. American Idiot is an exploration of ideological freedom and the harsh realities of the world.”

This musical won a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Musical Show Album and was nominated for a 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical.
