Cultural Event: Partisan Politics and Literacy

Ferris State University’s Economic Inequality Initiative is hosting speaker Sunil Joy on Wednesday, October 12th in Michigan College of Optometry Atrium. Refreshments and conversation will take place between 4:30 and 5:15pm, followed by the presentation  and Q&A from 5:15 to 6:30pm in MCO 210.

Sunil Joy is the Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust – Michigan. The Education Trust-Midwest is a non-partisan, statewide education research, information, and advocacy organization focused on what is best for Michigan students, particularly low-income, African American, Latino and American Indian students. They provide data driven information and expertise to our state’s families, educators, and policy and civic leaders about how to make Michigan a top education state and close out achievement gaps.

During his presentation, Sunil Joy will talk about the fact that more struggling readers could be held back under new legislation. There’s a battle being waged in Lansing about children in the third grade. New legislation would prohibit schools from promoting students to the fourth grade if they read at a second-grade level or lower.
