The Honors Program will be hosting their fourteenth annual Public Speaking Contest and are looking for qualified students to enter!

The contest is open to all Ferris Honors students currently enrolled in Comh. 121 Intro to Public Address. This is an open topic speech contest but, in observance of Ferris State’s involvement in The American Democracy Project, topics focusing on any aspect of political or civic engagement are highly encouraged. Speeches should be either informative or persuasive and should run about 6-8 minutes. The speeches can also be easily adapted from the honors section’s speech projects. Visual aids are encouraged but not mandatory and students should allow from possible powerpoint/computer issues and have a “plan B.” Dress is business casual.

Each honors section will “elect” the top two speeches from their class to represent their section in the preliminaries or professors will ask particular students to participate. You can also nominate yourself as long as you are currently enrolled in Comh 121. Preliminaries will be scheduled from 6-7pm on Tuesday, November 15th in rooms in the Starr Building (rooms to be announced in class). There will be four preliminary rounds and one top speaker will be selected from each round to advance to the finals.

The finals will be held in Science 102 at 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 15th. Finals will be judged by a “distinguished judging panel” made up of Ferris communication professors as well as staff and administrators with experience in communication. Speaker awards will be a $75 gift certificate for first prize and runners up will receive a $20 gift certificate. Students and Judges report to Starr 126 at 6pm sharp!

Entry deadline is Tuesday, November 8th at 5pm. To enter, please fill out the entry forms that will be handed out in your Comh 121 class and your communication professor will collect and deliver the forms to Dr. Patten’s Faculty Mailbox. Questions and concerns can be directed to Dr. Patten in 112 Johnson Hall or by phone at (231)591-3621.
