“The rise in prevalence of myopia, or nearsightedness, over the last 40 years is alarming and a cause for concern from both a clinical and public health stance. The World Health Organization projects that an estimated 5 billion people will have myopia in 2050. Additionally, as the proportion of people with high myopia increases, there comes with it an increase in associated ocular complications, such as retinal detachments, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration. In this Lunch and Learn, we’ll discuss some of the global approaches to dealing with this sudden myopic boom and possible methods of slowing the progression of the condition.

Dr. Stephanie Ramdass is a clinical researcher at the Vision Research Institute and adjunct faculty member at the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO). She completed her bachelor’s degree in Human Biology at the University of Toronto, Canada. She obtained a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, before receiving her Doctorate of Optometry at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry. Upon graduation of optometry school, she completed a residency in Cornea and Contact Lens at MCO and a fellowship of the American Academy of Optometry. Her research interests include myopia control, presbyopic lens designs, and the application of scleral lenses for normal eyes and in tinted form.”
