Potential RSO: Timmy Global Health

Dr. Kim Hancock, Department Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Science, is interested in starting a chapter of “Timmy” at Ferris State University and she wants YOU to help start it. “Timmy Global Health is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that partners with like-minded organizations and utilizes the energy of student and medical volunteers to expand access to healthcare in the developing world. In collaboration with their international and US partners, Timmy sends medical service teams to support the work of international partner organizations, and channels financial, medical, and human resources to community-based health and development projects in the countries where they serve. Through their work, Timmy seeks to strengthen local health systems while promoting a spirit of humanitarianism, global awareness, and a long-term commitment to ending health disparities amongst students and volunteers.”

Timmy Global Health was founded in 1997 by Dr. Chuck Dietzan, a pediatric rehabilitation specialist from Kokomo, Indiana, now practicing in Indianapolis. Dr. Chuck was inspired to start Timmy Global Health after working with Mother Teresa in India and the organization is named after his brother, Timmy, who died as an infant. Below is their mission and vision statements.

The Mission: “Timmy Global Health expands access to healthcare and empowers students and volunteers to tackle today’s most pressing global health challenges.”

The Vision: “Timmy is motivated by one simple vision: All people – regardless of who they are, what resources they have, and where they live – should have access to the quality healthcare they deserve. We believe that the people we serve should have the promise of healthy futures and that our volunteers should carry with them a lifelong commitment to humanitarianism, global awareness, and a health equity.”

The core of Timmy’s volunteer base is made up of university student throughout the United States. A Timmy chapter at Ferris State University would be a way to serve in both the Timmy partner sites abroad as well as the local community. The chapter would also fundraise to support Timmy patients and their international partners as well as advocate to raise awareness and to enhance dialogue about today’s global health challenges on campus and in the community.
