Leadership and Volunteer Stoles 2017

Honors Stoles are awarded to graduating Honors students by a committee of faculty and Honors Program staff after reviewing Senior graduation papers. Stoles may be worn at graduation, along with the Honors medallion. Those honored with a Stole will have their names engraved on a plate displayed in the Honors Program office. Students who receive stoles are those that have shown to go above and beyond in leadership and service during their time in the Honors Program at Ferris State University.

2017 Leadership Stoles

  • Leesa Deadwyler, Operations Supply Management, Leesa has made leadership a focus of her time at Ferris. She began as the social chair for the Honors Programming Board as a freshman and went on to co-found the Supply Chain Management Association. She served as the vice-president of the Honors Programming Board and as vice-president of the Supply Chain Management Association. She is also the vice president of membership for Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership society. She has enhanced her leadship skills by applying principles learned in her operations and supply chain management major and her human resource management minor, as seen most strikingly in her work as a residence hall desk service manager. She has been recognized as an outstanding campus leader by winning the Desk Service Manager of the Year Award in 2016, an Honors Outstanding Scholar Finalist and a Torchbearer Award in 2017.
  • Marc Jaruzel, Criminal Justice – Generalist, Marc helped in the growth of the Conscious Consumer Coalition RSO on campus and was treasurer of the Bulldog Sustainability Alliance at Ferris. He is an active member of the Honors Program by serving on the Honors Advisor Search Committee and the Honors Student Council. He, also, was an Honors peer mentor and facilitated an event during the Days of Service and Learning in Fall 2016. In addition, he was a member of the HQ platoon, Engineer Support Company, sixth Engineer Battalion in the reserve of the United State Marine Corps, where he was a fire team leader, until he recently transferred to the Michigan National Guard to pursue Officer Training. Michigan Campus Compact recognized Marc’s outstanding service and leadership by giving him an Outstanding Leader Award in 2016.
  • Josh Olszewski, Public Relations, Josh is the president of the Student Government Association. He also serves as chair of the Student Leadership Activity Advisory Council. In addition, he was president of the Music Industry Management Association. In 2015, he organized Music on the Muskegon, and international music festival. Josh shines on stage: he is a member of the band Beach Thief and often serves as an MC. He has been recognized as an outstanding campus leader: he won the Michigan Campus Compact’s Outstanding Leader Award and a Torchbearer Award that year.
  • Melanie Schafer, Social Work, Melanie was one of the original founders of Ferris’s Step Up! Program and continues to serve as a student leader planning events in this bystander awareness group. She also helped develop the First Generation College Students RSO. In addition, she was the vice-president of the Club Dance Team and served as an Honors peer mentor. She expresses her spirit of service as well through her internship in the Department of Health and Human Services in Mount Pleasant. She works many hours to help those who are vulnerable.

2017 Volunteer Stoles 

  • Katelyn Michalski, Biology – Pre-Medicine, Katelyn is the president of the Ferris’s chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. In addition, she was the leader of the NSCS’s mentoring program, Plan to Achieve Collegiate Excellence. Katelyn is also a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa, the Student Psychology Association, and the First Generation College Students RSO. She has recorded over 250 service hours at Ferris. Katelyn has been recognized for her leadership and service: She won the Michigan Campus Compact’s Newman Civic Fellows Award and Heart and Soul Award in 2016. She also received a Torchbearer Award in 2017.
  • Meri Dzielinski, Biology – Pre-Medicine, Meri is currently the secretary of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She has held a leadership position every semester since she began at Ferris. She was president of the Student Council, a committee head for Relay for Life, and community service chair and social media chair for the NSCS. She has also participated in the NSCS’s PACE mentoring program. In addition, she served as an Honors peer mentor. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, and Pre-Medicine and Pre-PA Club, and Pet Savers. She has recorded over 400 service hours during her time at Ferris. The Michigan Campus Compact recognized her achievements with a Heart and Soul Award in 2016.
  • Tori VanOeffelen, English Education, Tori has been the president of the Circle of Tribal Nations RSO for two years and was vice-president for one year before that. As president, she helped her RSO bring Matika Wilbur and her “Project 562” collection to Ferris, organized annual Thanksgiving events, and participated in Ferris’s International Festival of Cultures. Her RSO has made a powerful impact on Ferris’s cultural offerings. She has been a strong advocate of diversity on campus. In addition, Tori volunteers weekly at the Pet Savers animal shelter and also creates the videos for the shelter animals shown on Pioneer Online. She is a member of the English Society as well. She has registered over 280 service hours at Ferris. She has been recognized for her excellent service and leadership by receiving a Torchbearer Award in 2017.
  • Hannah Lamberg, Biology – Pre-Medicine, Hannah served as volunteer coordinator of Ferris’s Pre-Medicine Club, organizing two medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic. She also worked with the Student Government Association and the Office of International Education to expand participation and make the trip annual. In the Dominican Republic, she and her group measured vital signs, helped in health clinics, and visited patients in their homes. She also volunteered extensively at Spectrum Health and Hospice of Michigan. During her time at Ferris she recorded over 450 service hours. She has been recognized for her outstanding service by winning the Honors Program’s Outstanding Service award in 2015 and the Michigan Campus Compact’s Heart and Soul Award in 2016.
