The first Ferris band concert of the summer will be held on tonight (June 7th) at 7:00pm at The Old Jail in Big Rapids (220 South Stewart). If it rains, the location will be the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church on 304 Elm St. The Ferris Community Band concert will be directed by Dr. Richard Schott Cohen.

About the Concert

This is the first concert of the 52nd annual concert season, presented by the Ferris Community Summer Band. Area adults, college students, high school students, and advanced middle school students perform light and enjoyable selections for classmates, family members, neighbors and visitors to the Big Rapids area. Come join them for a very enjoyable evening of music and community support of one of the most beautiful historic works of architecture in Big Rapids – its Old Jail! The concert will be performed in the beautiful setting on the green lawn cuddled between this iconic building and surrounding churches.

  • The Blue Bells of Scotland, featuring euphonium soloist Ed Mallett
  • Mr. Hi Hat, featuring hi hat soloist Noah Mallett
  • On the Wings of Flight
  • South Pacific (selections from the musical)
  • Summertime, featuring tenor saxophone soloist Tony Weglarz
  • Xylophonia, featuring xylophone soloist Noah Mallett

About the Band

Sponsored by Ferris State University as part of its “Music for Life!” initiative, the Ferris Community Summer Band is celebrating its 52nd year of bringing the campus and the community together through music. It is open–at no cost–to all area adults, college students, high school students, and advance middle school students with band experience. In order to perform in a concert, musicians should attend the rehearsal beforehand. Musicians are invited to perform in as many concerts as they can that fit into their schedules. Musical friends and relatives visiting in town this summer are also welcome. To participate, either contact director Scott Cohen in advance (231-591-2484 or ) or simply come to the next rehearsal!
