Study Abroad Opportunity: Wales (Swansea)

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is accepting applications for the annual Honors Semester Study Abroad Program at Swansea University through UNCW. Applications are now open for the Spring 2018 term. The program accepts applications for students interested in participating in a required 3-credit pre-semester course in British Culture and Politics, regular semester of course work from the Swansea University Catalog (12 credit hour equivalent), and a two-hour honors seminar for credit.

Swansea University, overlooking beautiful Swansea Bay, is situated within a large area of landscaped parkland within walking distance of the city center.  To the west is the lovely Gower Peninsula with its broad bays and sandy coves. Swansea is a modern city of 200,000 with well-equipped leisure centers and cultural facilities. London can be reached by train in about 2 1/2 hours. Students will be hosted by Dr. Lee Schweninger, Professor in the Department of English at UNCW. He will be teaching one course at Swansea that examines films by American Indians, plus a 2-credit honors seminar on Wales native poet, Dylan Thomas.

Application: Undergraduates from any college or university, and any major, are welcome. Students must be degree-seeking, have a 3.3 cumulative GPA, and be an honors student to participate in the Honor seminar. The deadline to apply for those wishing to participate in the semester long experience is September 15, 2017. Course in

Costs: $13,272. The cost includes tuition and fees, accommodation, study abroad health insurance, the pre-semester course in British Culture and Politics, orientation, a bedding packet (including duvet), regional bus pass, and schedule field trips. Not included are airfare, meals, and books. Students should budget approximately $3,000 for these expenses. The application fee of $250 (non-refundable) is due with completed application by the application deadline. The rest of the payment will be due in mid-December. Semester Schedule:

  • Arrival: January 17, 2018 for the pre-semester course
  • Pre-Semester Course on British Culture and Politics (last two weeks of January)
  • Classes Start: beginning of February
  • Easter vacation will be more than three weeks long – yes, you read that right! – and offers an outstanding opportunity to travel widely in Europe
