Cultural Event: “Rethinking the Homeschooling Movement”

The Humanities Colloquium Series presents Professor John Scott Gray speaking on “Rethinking the Homeschooling Movement- WWJDD” on Thursday, September 21st at 11am in UCB 209.

The last 10 years has seen a dramatic increase in the number of parents in the United States choosing to home-school their children instead of sending them into the public grade school system. One study had the number increasing by 61.8% from 2003 to 2012, with the total number of home-schooled children reaching 1,773,000. This paper addresses the degree in which a religious home-schooled education might be problematic, looking at the issues from the perspective of John Dewey’s conception of education as laid out in Democracy and Education. Dewey recognized that there are many kinds of community life that impact behavior, including gangs and churches; there is still a need for common ground. For Dewey “Common subject matter accustoms all to a unity of outlook upon a broader horizon than is visible to the members of any group while it is isolated,” (MW 9, 26). This appreciation for this common group is essential, for Dewey states that “it is the business of education in a democratic social group to struggle against this isolation in order that the various interests may reinforce and place into one another,” (MW 9, 258).

All are welcome to this event. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Rachel Foulk at .
