Cultural Event: GRCC Diversity Lecture Series

The Grand Rapids Community College hosts a Diversity Lecture Series each year and they will have a speaker tonight (November 15th) at 7:00pm at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids. The Diversity Lecture Series is intended to give insight and understanding of multicultural issues to the West Michigan Community. It is designed to help audiences consider perspectives other than their own, encouraging civil debate, broadening the basis for critical though and promoting cultural understanding.

On November 15th, Julissa Arce will speak on “The American DREAMer: From Undocumented to Wall Street and Immigration Advocacy.” Julissa Arce is an author, immigration and education advocate, and co-founder/chairman of Ascent Education Fund. She is also a frequent contributor for CNBC, a board member for the National Immigration Law Center, and the former Director of Public Affairs at Define American, a media organization working to change culture around immigration and citizenship. Prior to becoming an advocate, she worked on Wall Street for Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch, where her professional success have rise to a personal paradox: she achieved the “American Dream” and yet was not part of what defined America. In both her memoir “My (Underground) American Dream” and on the lecture circuit, Arce recounts her experience in the corporate world as both a Hispanic woman and an undocumented American, giving a new perspective on the complex intersections of success, immigration and the American Dream.
