FSU Music Director, Scott Cohen, and FSU Art Gallery Director, Carrie Weis, will be hosting a Ferris Alumni and Friends Cultural Excursion to Spain (& Portugal) from May 6th to May 15th. This program is designed specifically for 12-18 NON-students (alumni, faculty, staff, retirees, and friends of Ferris). The package will include hotels, breakfasts, 2 specialty feasts, numerous guided tours, wine and cheese tastings, many museum and event tickets, and ground transportation. Attendees should be aged 21 and older. Below is information about each leg of the trip.
The famed El Prado museum and the Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art are both integrated into this trip. They will also take a quick trip to Don Quixote’s La Mancha region to see its fields of grain and ubiquitous windmills, and to sample its world-renowned Manchego cheeses. Next they will visit the city famous for the paintings of El Greco-Toledo. The program will conclude with an included Flamenco Show and dinner featuring tapas and paella.
The University of Salamanca is among the oldest universities in the world and it is celebrating its 800th anniversary. You will be guided through a contemporary public art exhibition that has been juxtaposed among the Classical, Gothic, Romanesque and even Roman edifications that comprise the city’s historic quarter. You will also visit two Cathedrals, have guided tours of museums including one on Art Nouveau, and travel short distances to visit a fortress in Almeida (Portugal), the charming walled medieval city of Ciudad Rodrigo, the historic Romanesque city of Zamora, and a winery to sample local wines.
Between Madrid and Salamanca you’ll have a photo op of the beautiful city of Avila, one of Spain’s largest walled cities. Then you will spend the majority of the day in Segovia, seeing the enormous Roman aqueduct traversing the city, visiting its iconic Alcazar castle and enjoying an included feast of local delicacies, including roast suckling pig.
