Italy Study Abroad Story: Lilly George

Honors student, Lilly George, utilized the Honors Funded Travel Scholarship to study abroad in Italy this summer. Below is a reflection of Lilly’s experience as well as some of her favorite photos from the trip. Thank you for sharing!

“This past month I was able to study abroad in Italy with some of my teammates and closest friends. I don’t even know where to start but I will begin by saying it was the most amazing and breathtaking 2 weeks of my life. I was able to see things such as the historic Colosseum, the beautiful Sistine Chapel and St. Peters Basilica, as well as the Leaning Tower of Pisa which I have only seen before in textbooks. I was able to look at paintings done by the famous Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. As well as experience a private boat tour around the Amalfi coast and ride up a chairlift 680 meters to the highest point on the most incredible island of Capri.

One of the things that really stuck out to me the most was how nice, caring, and compassionate the Italians were to us Americans. Sometimes it was difficult not knowing what a lot of things meant because I do not speak Italian or have much of an Italian background however, every person I met along my journey did everything in their power to make sure I was satisfied and having a great time. It really opened my eyes on the Italian culture and how they treat foreign people and I am looking forward to reaching out and figuring out ways I can do that in the future here at Ferris State.

I have an endless amount of gratitude for the Caserta family as well as Dr. Westercamp for passing on all of their knowledge about this great country and everyting they did for me over the course of the school year to get me ready for this trip. The memories and friendships I have made will last a lifetime. I hope every student at Ferris State who shows any interest in studying abroad will do it as it is something they will not regret. I am looking forward to continuing to share my experience with more family members, friends, and anyone who would like to hear. I am already trying to figure our when I can return to the beautiful country of Italy.”
