The Honors Program is hosting our 5th annual Days of Service and Learning, a series of service projects taking place throughout the month of September. It is easy to participate! Sign up through the links below. An honors student facilitator will be in touch with you to organize transportation and lead your project. Volunteering for a project is a great way to learn about and serve our community, get to know fellow honors students, and fulfill your honors service commitment.
Here are this year’s projects:
o The Salvation Army Store: Saturday, September 8 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Volunteers will sort and stock items at the Big Rapids Salvation Army store. Be aware that the work may involve exposure to dust. Sign up here.
o The Big Rapids Community Garden: Sunday, September 9 from 1 to 5 PM. The Community Garden is a non-profit organization making gardens available to the public. Volunteers will pull weeds and do other gardening tasks at the Second Avenue garden. Sign up here.
o Invasive Species Recognition Training: Friday, September 14 from 1 to 4 PM. A representative from the North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area will conduct a training that starts in the Honors Program office and finishes at Hemlock Park in Big Rapids. Volunteers will learn to recognize and report invasive species and, hopefully, be ready to train others in how to identify and report invasive species. This counts as service and as a cultural event. Sign up here.
o Muskegon River Trash Bash: Saturday, September 15 from 10 AM to 1 PM. Volunteers will pick up trash along the shores of the river at Highbanks Park in Big Rapids. Participants will need water shoes or waterproof boots if they wish to go into the water. We will be a part of a larger effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest river clean up. Sign up here.
o WISE: Saturday, September 15 from 1 – 5 PM. WISE provides crisis intervention and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Volunteers will be washing windows, making welcome bags, and organizing files. Sign up here.
o Clay Cliffs Nature Park Clean Up: Sunday, September 16 from 1 – 4 PM. Clay Cliffs Nature Park is located in Big Rapids. Volunteers will be picking up trash. Sign up here.
o Cran-Hill Ranch: Saturday, September 22nd 8:30 AM to 4 PM (lunch served). Cran-Hill Ranch is a Christian ranch and campground located near Big Rapids. Volunteers will be participating in their Annual Fall Clean-Up Day. Tasks include moving picnic tables, closing down the beachfront, painting, and other outdoor maintenance activities. Sign up here.
