ABOUT THE CONCERT
The Ferris Community Summer Band continues its summer concert series this week with its annual 4th of July Weekend Kickoff Concert!  This week’s concert will feature a patriotic assortment of American musical styles, and will feature soloists Noah Mallet (xylophone), Katie McInnis (vocals), and Nedra Neumann (clarinet).  We’re also honored to welcome members of the 126th Army Band of the Michigan Army National Guard, and its Commander, Big Rapids native Kimberly Ferrante.  We are also pleased to welcome former mayor of Grand Rapids and current member of Ferris State’s Board of Trustees, George Heartwell, who will deliver an address in celebration of Independence Day.

ABOUT THE BAND – AND HOW TO JOIN!
The Ferris Community Summer Band is elated to return to celebrate its 55th season of bringing our campus and the greater Big Rapids communities together – through music!  Sponsored by Ferris State University as part of its “Music for Life!” initiative, the band is open to all area adults, college students and high school students with band experience.  Musicians intending to perform in a weekly concert should attend the weekly rehearsal beforehand.  Musicians are invited to perform in as many weeks that fit their schedules.  Musical friends and relatives visiting from out of town are also welcome.  To participate, contact director Scott Cohen in advance [231-591-2484 or RichardScottCohen@ferris.edu] – or simply come to the next rehearsal!

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:  DR. RICHARD SCOTT COHEN
Scott Cohen has just completed his 19th year as Director of Instrumental Concert Ensembles at Ferris State University, where he directs the Ferris West Central Concert Band, the Ferris Symphony Band, the Ferris Community Summer Band, and the Ferris West Central Chamber Orchestra.  He also teaches piano and courses in classical music, world music and film music. Locally, Dr. Cohen has served on the boards of directors of the Festival of the Arts, the City of Big Rapids Park & Recreation Board, the Big Rapids Band Shell Development Committee, and the Big Rapids Band Shell Programming Committee.  He is also a board member of the Rotary Club of Big Rapids, the Tuba Bach Chamber Music Series, and Artworks of Big Rapids.  A native of Chicago, he is a Phi Beta Kappa scholar from the University of Illinois, a doctoral conducting graduate from Northwestern University, and a Fulbright Scholar to Spain.  He remains active as a conductor, trombonist, composer, music adjudicator, researcher, author, translator and lecturer throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
