D. Fagan MWF 1:00pm to 1:50pm in STR 220
This honors-enhanced section of LITR 202 focuses on African-American writers from 1750 to the present. The course focuses on a broad range of texts from both oral and written literary traditions, placing these texts in their historical cultural contexts and evaluating how literature both presents and critiques culture and its constructions.
Section 2:
R. Sammel MW Mix 12:00pm to 12:50pm in SCI 132
The course includes personal narratives, short novels, poetry, jazz, & blues. We begin with narratives of slavery; oral traditions & spirituals; Reconstruction & Jim Crow; the Harlem Renaissance (Hurston, Hughes); Modernism (Wright, Baldwin, Brooks); Progress & Protest: King, Jr., Malcolm X; Black Power Movement; Black Arts era; contemporary literature (Baraka, Clifton, Angelou, Morrison); the genius of John Coltrane; we conclude with student-led explorations of hip-hop & rap and their roots in 70s Harlem and African griot traditions.
